“Talith” (Prayer Shawl) is a Jewish word composed of two Hebrew words: “TAL” meaning “TENT” and “ITH” meaning “LITTLE”.
Wearing a tallith was like having your own private sanctuary or tabernacle to meet with God. Every adult male had his own individual prayer shawl. Each man would pull it up over his head and form form a tent where he could chant, sing worship songs, and call upon the name of Elohim, Yahweh and Adonai. This tent was intimate, private and set apart from anyone else and the cares and distractions of the world and enabled them to totally focus upon God. It was a “prayer closet” (Matt. 6:6).
The “prayer shawl” had fringe in each of its’ four corners artistically made. Each strand wrapping and knots of the cords had a purpose. The fringe was made with eight strands precisely wrapped. There were five knots at various positions, 613 in total, which are the exact number of commandments and statutes in the TORAH, the first five books in the Bible inspired by God and written by Moses. The cords colors on the talit were to be white and blue..
The LORD GOD’S instructions to the Israelite men were to LOOK at the fringe (Hebrew “Tsitzith”); to remember to perform, obey and carry out His commandments.
One of the mysteries scholars have debated over the centuries is about the exact shade of blue represented by the “tekhelet“. The Bible mentions talit in Numbers 15:37-41. The color in the ceremonial robes donned by high priests. Also the ritual prayer tassels worn by the common Israelite.
What is known about Tekhelit (pronounced t-CHELL-it) comes from the Talmud; the blue dye is produced from Murex trunculus secretions, the sea-snail still found in Israeli beaches. Traditional interpretations characterized Tekhelet as a pure blue; symbolic of the heavens so that Jews would remember God. Other Israeli scholars say the original color was closer to a “bluish purple“. The blue in the Israeli flag was inspired by the Tekhelet.

Stephen became a completed Jew in 1983. He and his wife of 47 years, Sherrie, became active in the Vineyard movement and were blessed to meet and worship with many early Vineyard Worship (VMI) artists in the mid-1980s.
Stephen was also an Associate Pastor and worship leader in a local Foursquare Church on the Central Coast of California (Meridian Fellowship) and he and his wife hosted numerous kinships and home groups. In the 1980s Stephen became involved in executive producing the worship album “Swept Up In Your Spirit” along with gifted worship singers and writers Steve Southworth, Ed Edwards, Bill Lummus and Scott Underwood.
In 1978 Stephen was the founder and President of Nautilus Recording, one of the early pioneering record labels involved in digital recording.
